New Sculpture - girl reading a book on horseback...

I haven't settled on the title for this new sculpture yet so I will simply be referring to it now as "Girl reading book on horseback". The piece was sculpted in Jmac Classic oil-based clay and I just delivered it to the moldmaker. After the mold is made she'll give me the wax pour, which I will chase before taking to the foundry to be cast in bronze. It measures 16"H x20"L x 9"W.

The initial start for this horse was sculpted on location (Plein Air Sculpting!) in Carefree, AZ when I took a Rod Zullo sculpting workshop at Scottsdale Artist School. I shipped the unfinished work to my studio and let it sit there for a couple of weeks as I worked out what I wanted to do for this piece.

Once I settled on changing that sculpture into a friendly old field horse I set about making the changes to the original sculpture that I had started and then worked on the girl reading the book. I remember being 10-14 years old and trading hours of stall mucking, tack cleaning and horse grooming in exchange for riding time. I spent a lot of time reading and re-reading classic horse books such as Black Beauty and American Velvet among others. A special time of day dreams and what-if possibilites ;-)

Originally I had the girl sculpted wearing her cowboy boots and planned on putting a sleeping dog or a backpack of books on the ground however the more I worked on the piece and grew to know the girl (me) that I was sculpting the more I thought that a barefoot girl gave the happy, dreaming and utterly contented and trusting atmosphere between girl and horse that I was looking to portray. I also pondered adding a halter to the horse but after talking it over with my husband, he really felt that no halter just seem so much more free  - let her unfettered feet.

This will be in bronze (edition size and price is still being determined) by late summer and will be showcased at the Loveland Sculpture in the Park show in August. It would also be wonderful in libraries and I invite those inquires as well!
