I like to sculpt in quiet. It’s like a prayer or meditation for me. Just me and the work. When it’s quiet, there is no music or people talking and that’s when ideas and inspiration comes. Sometimes it’s like a whisper in the studio. “Sculpt me” it says. In this case the ‘me’ in question was a boy and girl with Down Syndrome. I just felt the need to sculpt two kids just enjoying their favorite activities.
Hopefully someone will be walking through the show at the Loveland Sculpture in the Park August 11 and 12 and they will see a child that is like their child - and they’ll feel really good to see kids like their kids represented in sculpture. Here's to all kids everywhere!
“Loves Books” is an original ceramic sculpture measuring about 15” high featuring a girl who has Down Syndrome and loves reading her books. It is currently drying and waiting for her time in the kiln. Heavily grogged ceramic clay will be fired to cone 02.
